OpenAI, a front-runner in the realm of artificial intelligence, has executed a major change in its leadership, displacing CEO Sam Altman and appointing Mira Murati, its Chief Technology Officer, as interim CEO.
Altman was removed from his position and the board of directors following a detailed review that raised concerns about his communication with the board. The board stated that they no longer have faith in his ability to guide OpenAI.
Murati, who has been with OpenAI for half a decade, has been instrumental in the company’s evolution, particularly in the areas of research, product, and safety. Her profound understanding of the company’s operations, coupled with the board’s confidence in her abilities, makes her a suitable candidate for the interim CEO role.
In addition to the CEO replacement, the board – which includes chief scientist Ilya Sutskever and independent directors such as Quora CEO Adam D’Angelo – has announced changes to its structure. Greg Brockman, co-founder of OpenAI, will step down as chairman but will stay involved with the company in a different role.
Established in 2015, OpenAI has been a key player in AI research and development. The company underwent restructuring in 2019 to align with its mission and enable capital-raising efforts. This leadership shakeup underlines the board’s commitment to upholding the principles of OpenAI’s Charter amidst its growth. A formal search for a permanent CEO has been initiated.
