The popular cryptocurrency wallet application, MetaMask, was briefly removed from Apple Inc.’s App Store in the United States. However, the app was reinstated within a few hours.
The app’s removal was due to “an internal operational error,” as reported by a MetaMask spokesperson, and not an action taken by Apple.
The news first broke on Twitter by WatcherGuru. A MetaMask representative quickly confirmed the team’s awareness of the issue and assured they were working on its resolution.
Taylor Monahan, believed to be the lead product manager of MetaMask, warned users about potential malicious apps taking advantage of the situation, urging users to report any fake MetaMask apps they come across on the App Store.
Global public relations director for ConsenSys, Elo Gimenez, confirmed the removal and clarified that the issue was not related to any security concern or compromise on the users’ part. She also echoed Monahan’s appeal for help from the crypto community to spot and report any fake MetaMask apps.
By midday on Saturday, the app was restored and available for download on the App Store. Other crypto wallet apps, including Coinbase, Uniswap, and Binance, remained available in the store throughout.
Previously in 2019, MetaMask was briefly removed from Google Play app store but was reinstated a week later.
