Meta Platforms Inc.’s (NASDAQ: FB) CEO Mark Zuckerberg and AI researcher Lex Fridman have provided a sneak peek into the future of social interactions in Meta’s metaverse, featuring ultra-realistic “codec avatars.”
On Wednesday, Zuckerberg and Fridman demonstrated the capabilities of Meta’s metaverse technology in a podcast. The digital avatars, mimicking intricate facial gestures and body movements, delivered an intense sense of presence and closeness.
Developed by Meta’s Reality Labs, these avatars have crossed the uncanny valley, offering a level of authenticity that renders users comfortable in an increasingly immersive engagement.
In line with Meta’s grand vision, AI is being thoroughly embedded into their software and hardware to provide more immersive social experiences. This includes AI companions set to pair with the company’s forthcoming smart glasses.
Zuckerberg, during the podcast, elaborated on AI’s role in Meta’s offerings, emphasizing its importance in comprehending Metaverse’s content and context to improve the platform’s quality and performance.
The CEO also visualizes these photorealistic avatars being utilized for remote work meetings, gaming, and social engagements. Fridman believes the ability to teleport into virtual spaces using realistic avatars could revolutionize human communication.
However, the journey to realize this grand vision involves considerable technological and social hurdles. Initial demonstrations of the metaverse were glitchy, and acceptance of VR headsets and digital avatars by the public is yet to pick up pace.
