Coinbase’s Ethereum layer-2 network, Base, experienced its first major outage since its launch on August 9. The block production on the Base chain abruptly halted for approximately 43 minutes on September 5, requiring developers to quickly implement a fix. The issue was identified by the developers at 9:36 pm UTC, and block production has now resumed.
The outage was caused by a delay in block production due to an internal infrastructure refresh, as reported by Coinbase. They confirmed implementing a fix and noted that widespread recovery is underway. Base is actively monitoring the chain for any further issues following the outage.
Crypto education platform Collective Shift’s head of research, Matt Willemsen, pointed out that Ethereum’s layer-2 networks, including Base, are not as “battle tested” as Ethereum’s mainnet. This highlights the challenges and risks associated with layer-2 solutions, which aim to improve scalability and reduce transaction fees on the Ethereum network.
Though this outage is a setback for Base, it also serves as a reminder of the ongoing need for development and improvement in layer-2 networks to ensure their stability and reliability.
