The U.S. Government is believed to have control over the 5th largest Bitcoin wallet, which holds 94,643 BTC worth approximately $2.46 billion. This wallet is linked to the 2016 Bitfinex hack. It was recently discovered that on February 1st, 2022, around 567.5 BTC, valued at approximately $21.88 million, was transferred from the wallet known as 1CGA4s to a seizure address.
This suggests that the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) has taken control of the wallet and seized a significant amount of Bitcoin. The DOJ’s account, bc1qazcm763858nkj2dj986etajv6wquslv8uxwczt, is now holding $3.55 billion worth of Bitcoin connected to the Bitfinex hack.
It is reported that approximately 120,000 BTC, originally stolen in 2017 and valued at $75 million at the time, has now grown to a staggering $3.6 billion in value over the span of six years. This seizure by the U.S. Government marks a significant development in the recovery of stolen funds from the Bitfinex hack.
