OpenSea, the popular NFT marketplace, has made an important announcement that starting from 31 August, it will introduce optional fees for NFT creators. This decision means that creators will have the choice to charge fees on their NFTs or make them optional. As part of this change, OpenSea will be removing the Operator Filter feature that was launched in November 2022.
For existing collections that are currently using the Operator Filter, the creator rates set on OpenSea will continue to apply until 29 February 2024. After this date, creator fees will become optional. The same applies to all existing NFT collections on non-Ethereum blockchains.
Additionally, OpenSea is planning to update its user interface and add a filter to the collection page, making it easier for buyers to search for listings that pay the creator’s preferred rate. Sellers will also have the option to choose the creator’s preferred rate or set their own custom rate at the time of listing.
The Operator Filter was created to give creators more control over the sale of their NFTs by restricting them to marketplaces that charge creator fees for secondary sales. However, OpenSea has acknowledged that the Operator Filter did not work effectively as intended.
In related news, OpenSea recently added support for the Zora network, a new blockchain designed to reduce costs for creators and provide better support for media and culture. The Zora network has already gained support from over 45 platforms, including Sound, Mint.Fun, Galley, Highlight, and Rainbow.
