NFT collectors rushed to buy ‘Simpsons’-themed tokens, pouring nearly $2.5 million into a collection in under a day, following a spoof of NFTs in a recent episode of the iconic television show.
The unofficial Springfield Punks collection, which blends CryptoPunks’ design with ‘The Simpsons’ elements, rocketed to the top spot on OpenSea in less than 24 hours. The collection was launched free of charge on Sunday, with the 3,405 Ethereum NFTs quickly claimed by traders. Trading volume for the project has already exceeded 1,311 ETH (over $2.4 million), as per OpenSea’s marketplace data.
The collection, launched by parody artist Rino Russo, has become immensely popular, reaching daily trading volumes only surpassed by the Bored Ape Yacht Club (2,412 ETH) and CryptoPunks (1,893 ETH). As of now, the starting price for Springfield Punks NFTs on the secondary market is just under 0.11 ETH ($200).
Several ‘Simpsons’-inspired NFT collections competed for visibility on OpenSea, including “SimpsPunks,” “The Chimpsons Official,” and “Springfield Apes by Rino Russo.” These collections use signature elements of the beloved television show, such as donuts, beer, and blue beehive hairstyles, and apply them to profile picture (PFP) NFT projects.
Although the recent ‘Simpsons’ episode featured a spoof of several established NFT collections, there were no officially licensed ‘Simpsons’ NFTs released in tandem with the episode. However, in 2021, to promote the launch of Disney+, Disney released NFTs of Homer, Bart, and his skateboard on the marketplace VeVe.
