The team at The Browser Company built over two dozen prototypes, exploring various possibilities. From having AI as your browser to a simple ChatGPT sidebar, they considered it all. Eventually, they settled on five features called Arc Max, powered by a combination of GPT-3.5 and Anthropic.

Ask ChatGPT: You can ask ChatGPT questions directly from the Arc Command Line. It might not be the most exciting feature, but it’s there.
Tidy Tab Titles: When you pin a tab in Arc, the browser automatically renames it, making it easier to find in your sidebar. No more searching for that wordy Amazon listing or vague page name.
Tidy Downloads: Similar to tab titles, Arc renames your downloads with descriptive names instead of ambiguous file names. No more guessing what that random combination of numbers and letters is supposed to represent.
Five-Second Previews: Hover over a link, press Shift, and Arc will fetch a short summary and preview of the webpage. It’s like a sneak peek before diving into the full content.
Ask on Page: When you’re searching for something on a webpage using Command-F, and it can’t find it, Arc’s AI comes to the rescue. It queries the AI to get an answer specific to the page you’re looking at.
These features are designed to make your internet life easier without constantly reminding you that they’re powered by AI. Nobody wants to be bombarded with AI messages all the time. It’s like that one person at a party who can’t stop talking about themselves.
Take the Ask on Page feature, for example. Let’s say you’re reading about Mongolia (apparently, a favorite topic for the demo team). You want to know what millennials are doing in Mongolia. Arc’s AI can help answer that question, taking you beyond the limitations of typical on-page search.
In fact, Ask on Page seems like a feature that should be standard in every browser. It’s a low-touch way to bring in AI and provide relevant information. And it’s not just The Browser Company jumping on this trend; other browsers like SigmaOS and Opera have similar features in the pipeline.
The Browser Company didn’t dive headfirst into AI without testing the waters first. They explored many higher-touch ideas, prototypes overloaded with AI.
