Democratic Presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has pledged to review the case of Silkroad’s founder, Ross Ulbricht, if elected. Kennedy Jr. also indicated plans to pardon Julian Assange and Edward Snowden on his first day in office.
According to an interview with Bitcoin Magazine on Wednesday, Kennedy Jr. expressed concern about the fairness of Ulbricht’s conviction and sentence. Ulbricht is serving a double life sentence for creating Silkroad, a dark web marketplace facilitating transactions with Bitcoin.
Assange, founder of Wikileaks, and Snowden, former CIA contractor and self-proclaimed whistleblower, have long been targeted by the U.S. government for leaking sensitive information.
Kennedy Jr.’s interest in Bitcoin was sparked by witnessing the response to peaceful demonstrations, such as the trucker strike. He sees the need for a currency that is independent and beyond government control.
Expressing concern about government attacks on Bitcoin, Kennedy Jr. proposed issuing treasury bills backed by hard assets like Bitcoin, platinum, gold, and silver. His aim is to provide greater stability and independence from government control.
He said: “I’m very concerned about all the government attacks on Bitcoin. You know, what I would like to do is to at least provide some issuance of treasury bills, that it’s backed by hard currency.”
Despite his support for Bitcoin, he opposes central bank digital currencies, fearing they would become tools of power and control.
