Ethereum Supreme Court

Matter Labs co-founder and CEO, Alex Gluchowski, has suggested the creation of an “Ethereum Supreme Court.” This on-chain court system would serve as a final destination for resolving disputes related to smart contracts, similar to the United States Supreme Court. Gluchowski believes that such a system would deter bad actors, strengthen the Ethereum network, and protect protocols against external interference.

Under Gluchowski’s proposal, disputes and emergency upgrades would be managed through a hierarchical system of on-chain courts. The Ethereum layer-1 soft fork would act as the “Court of Final Appeal.” Each protocol would have its own governance mechanisms and designate a special contract to trigger an appeal.

During an emergency upgrade, an appeal period would allow users to challenge the decision of a lower court. However, they would be required to provide a pre-defined bail deposit. The Ethereum Supreme Court would serve as the highest level for appeals.

Gluchowski acknowledges the need for strong social consensus for this on-chain court system to function effectively. While there are existing solutions to handle disputes, Gluchowski argues that they are not entirely suitable. Matter Labs and the zkSync team are willing to finance research into the proposal.
